Pinehurst Championship Golf Experience

“Tuftstown,” or Pinehurst as we know it today, provides the perfect setting for innovation and motivation with business partners.  With a foundation that began in 1895, when Boston Philanthropist James Walker Tufts purchased 5,800 acres of ravaged timberland in the Sandhills region of central North Carolina, this story sets the tone for an experience driven by business effectiveness.  This land, which cost Tufts about $1 per acre, was a barren, sandy wasteland.  Many thought Tufts the fool for his purchase, but the astute businessman sold his thriving Soda Fountain Company on the idea of a health retreat – far away from the cares of the world.

From the very beginning, Pinehurst was designed as a philanthropic gesture by Tufts, as a place for middle-class Americans to recuperate from the ailments of the time. Tufts idea was to create a New England-style village with walkways and year-round greenery, so he hired the firm who designed Central Park to create a master plan for the ravaged land.  Tufts desire for wellness and relaxation, along with his forward thinking innovation, introduced golf to the resort in the early 1900’s. 

Around the world today, Pinehurst is where the American golf story is rooted, and where it continues to flourish. Locked with its archives are thousands of moments that define each generation for the past 100 years.
